Athens of the North – The University of Edinburgh

Many things happened in history in 1583, but what matters to me is that spring morning when I opened my doors! In Edinburgh, a city where the sounds of bagpipes mingle with lush nature, I was founded to give courage, inspiration, and knowledge to young geniuses.

I have mentored many accomplished young people who have made me proud with Nobel Prizes, Fields Medals, Abel Prizes, and Olympic medals; Charles Darwin hurried through my hallways as he formulated his Theory of Evolution; and Arthur Conan Doyle spent his lunch breaks on the campus lawns as he created his legendary character, Sherlock Holmes. And many more students have contributed to my reputation as the Athens of the North.

Today, I have valuable academics and dedicated students who have enabled me to rank among the world's best universities by working in various fields, primarily artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and engineering. I would like to briefly mention a few of them.

Combining their passion for research with humanitarian values, my students used artificial intelligence technology to observe the development of cancerous cells and predict the next stage. Using their knowledge of biology and evolution for this study, my students discovered a new technique they named "The Repeating Evolution of Cancer," taking medical research a step forward.

My research students at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine examined the DNA of 400 terrier dogs and discovered a DNA mutation that could cause respiratory problems in this dog breed.

Many of my students, who have authored numerous research projects and scientific studies, are mentored by world-renowned academics. One of them is Professor Evelyn Telfer, who, through her work on reproductive health, develops new treatment methods for women who have lost their fertility and those undergoing cancer treatment.

Speaking of inspiring and successful academics, I'd like to introduce you to Noreen Murray. She is recognized as one of the world's most respected molecular geneticists and laid the foundations for the development of genetic engineering. Besides making valuable contributions to the scientific world, she has always supported my students in their scientific careers.

With all the opportunities I offer at the University of Edinburgh, my students challenge the present, the future, and their own limits; they conduct experiments in my laboratories, boldly question with instructors who are pioneers of critical thinking, and build new frameworks of thought in my library. My students also experience the excitement of discovery outside the campus, in this magical city that gives me my name.

With its traditions bearing the traces of Scottish culture, its streets steeped in history and art, and its captivating natural beauty, this city attracts countless people from different geographies; it creates global opportunities for fun, encountering new cultures, experiencing different flavors, and much more.

You might encounter my students in the Royal Mile, enlivened by street artists, experiencing different cuisines, happily spending time on Princess Street, or embarking on an adventurous climb in Arthur's Seat.

Much more than what I've told you is waiting here to inspire you. To become one of the minds that change the world, all you have to do is take a confident, powerful step, and leave the rest to my official representative. EdukasJust leave it there!
