Belfast is one of the UK's vibrant and culturally rich capital cities, and it also stands out for its affordable cost of living for students. Especially when compared to other major student cities in the UK, studying in Belfast can be a more economically sustainable option.
Accommodation: One of the biggest expenses for students, accommodation is more affordable in Belfast compared to other major cities. Various accommodation options are available for students:
University Halls of Fame: University halls of residence, such as those at Queen's University Belfast and Ulster University, are popular options, often including bills (heating, electricity, water, internet) and offering a social environment. Hall prices vary depending on room type (single, shared, with/without bathroom) and amenities. For example, weekly fees at Queen's University Belfast halls for the 2024-2025 academic year averaged between £130 and £200. This is significantly lower than hall prices in cities like London or Edinburgh.
Private Student Residences: The city also has private student residences. These generally offer more modern facilities and may be slightly more expensive than university dormitories. However, they are still more affordable than similar accommodation options in other major cities. Weekly fees here can range from approximately £150 to £250.
Shared Houses: Houses rented by a group of students are an effective way to reduce costs, especially for long-term stays. Rent varies depending on the size, location, and condition of the house. In central areas, the monthly rent for a shared house can be between £300 and £500 per person. Utilities are generally not included in the rent and represent an additional cost.
Transportation: Belfast has a relatively compact city structure, and many students can reach campus on foot or by bike. Public transportation is also well-developed, and discounted ticket options are available for students.
Food: Another significant expense for students, food offers options to suit different budgets in Belfast.
Social Life and Entertainment: Belfast has a vibrant social life and a rich cultural heritage. Many free or affordable activities are available for students:

Compared to other major student cities in the UK, Belfast offers a more affordable cost of living, particularly in terms of basic expenses such as accommodation and transportation. The city's compact size, public transport options, and student-friendly atmosphere allow students to manage their budgets more easily. Furthermore, university grants, discounts, and free events also help ease the financial burden on students. Of course, every student's lifestyle and spending habits will differ, but in general, Belfast is an attractive option for those who want to enjoy a comfortable student life while receiving a quality education. Research and student feedback also support the idea that Belfast is one of the most affordable student cities in the UK.
