UAT-UK Tests: ESAT, TMUA and TARA — Top Universities Application Guide with EDUKAS

1- What is UAT – UK?

UAT-UK (University Admissions Tests UK) is a program run in collaboration with Pearson VUE and comprises three centralized exams used for some university applications in the United Kingdom:

  • TMUA (Mathematical Reasoning Test)
  • ESAT (Engineering and Science Application Test)
  • TARE (Academic Reasoning Test)

Exams are held twice a year. October ve January It is carried out in the months

2- Complete Calendar and Registration Processes

Registration Opens: July 31, 2025

  • TMUA, ESAT, and TARE Registration begins on July 31st.

January Test Session (Sitting 2)

  • ESAT: January 6–7, 2026; TMUA: January 8–9, 2026; TARE: January 12–13, 2026.
  • Register: October 27 – December 19, 2025.
3-Who will take which test?

 

ESAT
  • It is mandatory for applications to universities such as Cambridge and Imperial College London, especially for Engineering, Chemistry, Science and Veterinary Medicine.
TMUA
  • It is accepted by many universities in fields such as Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, etc. Schools like Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, Durham (for Mathematics and Statistics departments only), and UCL are particularly in demand.
TARE
  • UCL has made it mandatory for some social sciences, mathematics, and computer science programs with an intake date of 2026. All applicants to these programs must take the TARA exam.
  • Other universities, such as Cambridge, may also use TARA, but the final list is not yet clear; Cambridge uses its own test for some of its programs.
4- Exam Formats & Fees

 

ESAT
  • The exam lasts approximately 2 hours and is taken by selecting from more than three subtests (Mathematics 1 + 2/3).
TMUA
  • 2 hours 30 minutes, two sections: Mathematical Application and Mathematical Reasoning. No calculator, no lost points. Fee: UK/Ireland £75, other international centers £130.
TARE
  • Three modules in 120 minutes:
    1. Critical thinking (22 questions, 40 min)
    2. Problem solving (22 questions, 40 min)
    3. Written expression (750 words, 40 minutes).
  • Note-taking: IMPORTANT modules will be graded, and the essay section will be sent directly to the selected universities. The fee is estimated at £75/£130; final announcement is awaited.
5- University and Department Requirements

 

  • UCL:
    • TARE Required fields include: Computer Science, Mathematical Computing, Robotics & AI, Management Science, Social Sciences + Data Science, Sociology, etc.
    • TMUA It is now also required for Economics (BSc) applications.
    • ESAT It has become mandatory for Electrical and Electronics Engineering (BEng).
  • Cambridge:
    • ESAT: Chemistry, Engineering, Science, Veterinary Medicine.
    • TMUA: Computer Science, Economics, etc.
    • TARA: Possible, but not confirmed.
  • Imperial:
    • ESAT: All Engineering and Natural Sciences.
    • TMUA: Computing, Math, Econ-Fin-Data.
    • TARA: Possible, but not confirmed.
  • University College London:
    • ESAT: Electrical and Electronics Engineering departments and variants.
    • TMUA: Economics.
    • SCAN: CS, Math Computation, Robotics/AI, Management & Social Sciences, Sociology.
6-Preparation and Resources
  • Free sample questions, timed practice exams, and guides for all tests can be found on the UAT-UK website.
  • For TMUA and ESAT, the old exam papers are still active; for TARA, the question guide was published in May 2025.

     

7- Result Publications & Continuity
  • The results of the October session are usually announced in late November–early January.
    • For example, TMUA October results were announced on November 14, 2025.
    • TARA results will be communicated within 4 weeks.

These three tests have become virtually mandatory when applying to many prestigious UK universities. To succeed:

  1. Initially, clarify which tests will be taken (specific to the course and university).
  2. Make sure to keep track of the registration dates (especially the period between September 29-30).
  3. You need to prepare thoroughly with practice exams.
