Important changes to UK student visas!

UK Student Visa "Maintenance / Financial Sufficiency" Requirement (Student Route)
The "maintenance requirement" (financial sufficiency for living expenses) plays a significant role for UKVI student visa applications. Below are the latest changes to this requirement and important points to consider.
- Previously, it was monthly for regions outside London. £1,023For London £1,334 Values such as these were used. However, these amounts have been changed with the new regulation. New Rules Effective from January 2, 2025
UKVI has increased the expected values for maintenance requirements as of January 2, 2025.
New changes comparatively is as follows:

Moreover:
- Payments for accommodation (particularly university halls of residence) can now be deducted to as little as £1,483 (previously the ceiling was lower).
- Financial resources may belong to individuals – student, parent, and spouse (spouse applying or already in the UK) accounts can be used; however, rules and documents will be rigorously examined.
Graduate/Post-Study Visa Duration and Changes
The "graduate visa" (post-study work route) allows you to stay and work in the UK for a specific period after graduation. The duration and conditions of this visa are also subject to change between 2026 and 2027.
Current Situation (as of 2025)
- Currently, Graduate visas are available for undergraduate or postgraduate graduates. 2 Years valid.
- Graduate visa duration for PhD (or other research degree) graduates 3 Yearsd.
- Graduate visas cannot be extended; however, it is possible to switch to other visa categories after graduation.
Changes after January 1, 2027
According to official sources, an update indicates that the Graduate visa validity period will be shortened starting in 2027.
- For Graduate visa applications made on or after January 1, 2027, the visa validity period for undergraduate and teaching-focused postgraduate graduates will be extended. 18 months (1 year 6 months) it will be.
- However, the visa validity period will remain the same at 3 years for doctoral/research-focused (PhD and similar) graduates.
Application Timing Effect

a real Example Scenario and Application
For example:
- Let's say you're going to start your master's program in January 2026 (at a university outside London).
- If you apply for your student visa around October 2025, the monthly living allowance will be £1.023. If you apply after November 11, 2025, this figure will increase to £1,171.
- If you apply for a Graduate visa at the end of 2026 after completing your program, you can stay for 2 years. However, if you postpone your application until 2027 and the application is made after January 1, 2027, your visa will only be granted for 18 months (for postgraduate graduates).
- For PhD students, the Graduate visa validity period remains 3 years; this regulation does not affect them.
