UK Immigration Changes 2025–2026: A Comprehensive Guide for Students, Graduates and Work Visa Applicants

The United Kingdom has announced extensive immigration changes that will come into effect in 2025 and 2026. These regulations affect many people, from students and graduates to employers and dependent applicants.

1. Raising the English Proficiency Requirement

From 8 January 2026, the required English level for Skilled Worker, Scale-up and High Potential Individual (HPI) visas will be raised from B1 to B2. This update applies only to primary applicants. The IELTS equivalent requires a minimum overall score of 6.0 with no band below 5.5. This change is part of the UK’s aim to raise the standards of skilled workers.

2. New Regulations for Family and Dependent Visas

Significant changes have also been made to family reunification and dependent applications. "Relationship validity" assessments have been made stricter, and it has been stated that the status of dependents may be affected if the sponsor's visa is cancelled. There are certain restrictions on family reunion procedures. These regulations indicate that family reunion application processes will be examined in more detail.

3. Increased Living Expense Requirements for Student Visa Applications

The minimum living expenses required to be shown on Student Visa applications are being increased as of November 11, 2025. Students studying in London will need to show £1.529 per month, while those studying outside London will need to show £1.171 per month. These amounts are mandatory for CAS applications for the 2025–2026 academic year. This regulation aims to demonstrate that students have the financial means to cover their living expenses in the UK.

4. Increase in Immigration Skills Charge Fees

The Immigration Skills Charge that employers must pay during sponsored applications is being increased from December 16, 2025. The amount payable by large companies will be £1.320, while for small businesses and charities it will be £480. This increase directly impacts employers' sponsorship costs.

5. New Restrictions Introduced Under Work Visas

Several tightening measures have been implemented under the Work Routes program. Seasonal Worker visas will now be issued for a maximum of six months. A quota of 8.000 people per year has been introduced for HPI visas. Suitability checks will be more thorough during the application process, those overstaying their visas will face a one-year entry ban, and those making false statements will face a ten-year ban. Furthermore, individuals with outstanding debts to the NHS or other public institutions may have their visa decisions negatively impacted.

6. Internal Access Rights for Students for Innovator Founder Visa

From November 25, 2025, students will be able to switch to the Innovator Founder Visa category without having to leave the UK. This significant change presents a great opportunity for students studying in the UK and aiming for entrepreneurship. The visa includes up to three years of residence, the right to bring family members, and the possibility to apply for settlement after three years. Furthermore, unlike other entrepreneurship visas, there is no investment requirement.

7. General Assessment

These changes are significant and important regulations for those planning to study, work, or settle in the UK. In particular, the shortening of the PSW (Professional Service Work) period, the increased English language requirement, and the tightening of work visa controls may require international students to reconsider their plans. At EDUKAS, we support our students in making the right decisions throughout this process.
